Tips on How To Write an Amazon Kindle Book

Do you want to make money from e-books and the Amazon Kindle?  If so, you have many options.  You can join Amazon’s affiliate program, Associates, and help to generate sales.  When you do, you get paid.

This is an easy way to make money with little to no work.  However, if you want to invest time into your ability to make money, you can learn more about how you can make a book online.  With a free Amazon account, you can sell these e-books on their website and make some money.

Here are a few guidelines on writing an Amazon Kindle ebook.

What is nice about writing Amazon Kindle books is that anyone can do it.  Those with experience writing print books, e-books, or web content articles are at an advantage.  These individuals are familiar with the dos and don’ts of writing for pay.  However, if you have never published anything in print, even on the web, you can still make money.  Before you start, you should continue reading on for a few helpful e-book writing tips.

First of all, you need to understand what an e-book is.  If you are unfamiliar with e-books and web content writing, you may not have the slightest clue as to what they are.  Electronic books, otherwise known as e-books, are those that are published online, instead of print.  Internet users can use their computer or the Amazon Kindle to download and read them.

The Amazon Kindle is great for accessing ebooks because it is a small, wireless device which can download ebooks in minutes without the needs for cables or a computer. It has a high-resolution display that looks very much like paper and can hold hundreds of ebooks in its memory at any one time.

You may not realise that many on the New York Time’s Best Seller List are available in e-book format for the Amazon Kindle and other similar devices.  And the good thing is you don’t need to be an established author to write an e-book. Don’t assume all e-books are only for novels because it can be on any topic.  Popular books include how-to guides, memoirs, horror, romance, and more.  Your options are virtually unlimited.

Before you start writing, it’s always a good idea to first create an outline of your ebook.  Writing an ebook can be overwhelming for new writers.  As previously stated, many automatically think of those on the bestseller list.  Don’t let this intimidate you.  You don’t have to have a best selling book to make money.

It also doesn’t have to be 200 pages long.  Some popular e-books are less than 50 pages long.  As long as you get your point or story across, it doesn’t matter how long or short an electronic book is.

DON’T limit yourself.

You aren’t guaranteed you will sell any of your Amazon Kindle books, but there is a good potential to make money.  For that reason, don’t limit yourself.  Do you want to create an e-book on a popular subject, such as working from home or saving money?

Maybe you also want to turn on your creativity and write a romance novel?  Then why not do both?  In fact, the more books you write, the easier it will be to make money.

It’s a good idea to write your e-book in Microsoft Word or possibly Open Office, which is free and does most of what Microsoft Office does.  Microsoft Word comes standard on most computers and is available for sale separately.  This program is good because it has a spell and grammar checker.

If you are an inexperienced writer, you will probably make mistakes in your grammar or spelling.  However, Microsoft Word will catch most mistakes for you.   By typing your e-book in Microsoft Word, you not only get editing help, but your document is automatically ready for upload.  Word documents are acceptable for conversion into a Kindle book and Amazon automatically converts them into the correct digital text format for you.

NEVER add “fluff”

Ebooks come in a number of different formats and sizes.  Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you need to have an e-book that is 300 pages long.  If you are writing a how-to book on how to save money at the grocery store, just start writing.

If you get your point across in only 75 pages, that’s all you need.  Slightly lower the selling price of your book to compensate for the small amount of content.  Honestly, readers don’t want to waste their time with fluff or fillers.

Proofread your ebook

Make sure that you have proofread your e-book before uploading and converting to digital text.  As you may already know, Microsoft Word catches most grammar and spelling errors for you.  But, it isn’t 100% full proof, so make sure you have proofread your document at least twice before converting it to a Kindle ebook.

Table of contents

Finally, don’t forget to add a table of contents.  Whether you write a fiction or non-fiction book, make sure you have added a table of contents.  Put the name of each chapter or section and the page it starts on.  Just in case you didn’t know, the table of contents comes after the cover.

I hope these tips on how to write a Kindle book have helped you to put you on the right road to writing  your Amazon Kindle ebook and that it will be a great success.

After attending the Hawaii Writers conference, I was encourage to write my book about the “flip side of running a B&B” – the Guests from Hell and other stories. One of the presenters told me I should write a Kindle book, a literary agent asked me to send her something when I had “critical mass” – can I do both or is it better to select one? Mahalo, Penny

  2. admin says:

It wouldn’t take much extra work to do both versions. The Kindle version would probably be easier to publish and if it was successful could be used to promote it to book publishers.

    Great Article.

Were you trying to provide a real life example of your proofreading tip when you used “100% full proof” instead of “100% fool proof”?

If so, you made your point. If not, well you made it anyway.

    Thank you for the information.

    Hello,
I have an idea for Kindle. My idea is for students in schools to have kindles for their books such as their science books, social studies books, Math books, English books, and many other books teachers give to the students. I think this is a good idea because it is way more convient then carryying 10 pound books around all day instead u can have a light electronic device that has all of the books in it. Please let me know what you think of my idea. Thank you.’

I think this is a good idea that will happen one day but the only problem is the cost of a Kindle for each student. Who will pay for them – the school or the pupil?

  6. Ueli Schaefer says:

Can I use the keyboard at the bottom of the Kindles to write text (a book ?) in Word format ? If yes, how much storage capacity is there and how can the written text be transferred to my Windows computer to be reworked and finalized ?

  7. Sergio Sedas says:

At our University they have purchased Kindles and downloaded the books that they are interested in.

Students “check out” the kindle and have access to the digital books.

A wonderful way to give students access to the kindle with little or no money.

  8. Genti says:

I think Kindle doesn’t cost that much comparing to the real books you buy in a year. we have the technology and we should make this thing happening soon

  9. Borsia says:

Unfortunately the Kindle format is not Word friendly, or writer friendly for that matter. To get an idea of just how their interface works you should write your project longhand on paper place it in your food processor along with hard copy of any images. Set the processor to chop and pulse 10-15 times. Pour the resulting mulch on a table. You can view the resulting format from any angle as it will be the same.
My recommendation for the future versions of the Kindle is to simply use the Word or PDF format.
For those who want to write for the Kindle I suggest examining a number of existing works, in particular their formatting, before you write anything.

Hiya I did as you have laid out on what to do, but how do I make an actual Kindle E-Book because I am a writer and I would love to share my stories with people. So I set up an account but it doesn’t show what to do to get my book on to their site. I am also not very website/creation savvy so is there a more ABC 123 step guide as well?? Thanks

  11. admin says:

You know the feeling that you’re trapped inside all along and then someday, today, you came across an information that un-canned you…? That’s my experience reading your article here.
I have one question though; isn’t there some sort of moderation of the pieces that are submitted on the Kindle? Even after one might have thorough proofread one’s work; some kind of editing by the admin of the website.

  14. admin says:

Not too sure what you mean by un-canned but the only thing that is moderated are the comments. If you want to submit an article about the Kindle then feel free to do so. If it’s interesting then it could be published on this site. And yes it might be edited, but only after notifying the author of any changes necessary.

Are there any restrictions as far as intellectual property is concerned when writing for Kindle? I’d like to write a sequel to a movie. Plus, I have a Star Trek story idea klunking around in my head.

Also, do you need an agent to write for Kindle?
    Thanks!

  26. Raquel says:

I’m waiting and many people I know are ansiously for an e-book reader with note-taking capabilities (pen writing not keyboard writing) to appear in the market. Preferably that allows marking and note taking in PDF format. I could leave home the tons of books and note-books I carry everyday.
    Is Kindle considering this possibility?
